Tra My Nguyen (1992) is a visual artist and designer, based in Berlin. Her interdisciplinary practice draws upon Vietnamese diaspora perspectives for decontextualizing commodities and garments within the tangling connections of hyper-globalization.
Focusing on discourses of consumerism, mobility, gender and class identity, the project examines the motorbike culture in Vietnam and its emerging female motorcyclist’s street style, called ‘Street Ninja’. The work proposes a speculative emancipatory strategy: by reconfiguring the meaning of mobility and women’s experience in Vietnam, the ‘Street Ninjas’ become protagonists in appropriating (public) spaces by using feminist collective affinity.
